I think you should follow only your industry related people. For Example if you are a SEO, you should follow Google on twitter. That will surely help you to get desired information.

The problem I have with Twitter is that I seem to get flooded with unnecessary information which I have to wade through to get to the good stuff – which seems to be thin on the ground.

Hi there,
Ok, I agree twitter is a great tool for customer service, promoting ans other strange purposes out there, but this is not a community application, sorry to say this is a promotional tool with market options.
I personally use twitter a lot, however, only as a promotional and educational director tool.

Tip* to deliver updated content everyday on twitter, you can use a news aggregator or RSS feed, you can also post at planned times during the day. The max. tweets you should post daily should be between 2 and 4. 5 or more per day is overkill.
